Topic: Firefighters
Objectives:
  • The students will be able to name the local fire departments in their area.
  • The students will be able to name equipment firefighters use.
  • The students will be able to name one historical fact about the local fire departments.

Procedures:
  1. Activate Prior Knowledge: Introduce the KWL chart for the lesson. I will fill in the parts of the KWL chart as I ask questions about the local fire departments we can fill in what we know. I will guide the students through the what we want to know section.
  2. I will list the local fire departments names onto the board and we will discuss where they are located.
  3. We will count how many fire departments there are in the Pine Grove Area. We will list each date that the fire departments began their service. We will create a timeline to show when each fire department began. We will use the data listed on the websites and information from the local historical center to fill in our timeline. Since the beginning of each fire department they have had a person who was in charge and the leader of the fire house.
  4. We will discuss how each department has a leader. This person is called the chief. He tells each firefighter what they are responsible for doing. To be a firefighter it takes hard work, requires a lot of money and takes up a lot of time. Firefighters need special equipment to help them fight the fires so that they are protected. The cartoon shows what equipment the firefighters need and how much money the items cost for a firefighter.   5. We will use the NARA worksheet on cartoons to analyze this cartoon. I will complete the worksheet with the discussion of the class. I will ask questions that will guide the completion of the worksheet.
  6. Close the lesson by guiding the following discussion: We have discussed a lot about the firefighters and our local departments. What can we fill in for the what we learned section of our KWL chart.
